Governance at Colegio Roosevelt
Non-profit educational governance is an intentional practice that is developed over time through partnership with the Superintendent, guided by strategic initiatives and annual goals, reflected upon through an annual self-assessment process, carefully succession planning, and a well-developed onboarding and professional learning program.
What is the work of the Colegio Roosevelt Board of Directors?The Work of the Board is to safeguard the school’s mission, steward the school’s resources with the highest level of accountability and transparency, and partner with and hold the superintendent accountable for the oversight, execution, and administration of the school's mission, strategic initiatives, and operations.
The Board oversees a number of committees to help advance the work of the Board and to accomplish its annual goals. Some Board committees host community volunteers to help thought leadership in the work to advance the school forward. How is the Board structured?Board Meetings occur nine times each year. Board members commit to three year terms and these terms can be renewed up to three times. The Board accomplishes much of its work in its committees. These committees bring recommendations to the full Board for approval. The Board also has ad hoc committees that may operate for a limited period for a specific purpose. Committee membership is an annual commitment. In addition, the Board has an Executive Committee that includes the President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary.

How is the Board of Directors of Colegio Roosevelt composed?Colegio Roosevelt has a 12-member board. Each member brings unique personal experiences from a diverse variety of professional backgrounds. The collective experience of the Board provides a comprehensive, overall perspective that supports the Superintendent and helps the School prosper.

- Approve major initiatives that will impact the whole School (such as the building projects associated with the implementation of the Master Plan).
Task Forces
The board also has a few task forces in place to support its agility in responding to the needs of the community during periods of high communication demand or when a vulnerability in the environment arises. These tasks forces are represented by members of the board and professional service teams such as lawyers, communication firms, and consultants. Task Forces do not meet regularly and are only called upon as needed.
Principles of Good Practice
At Colegio Roosevelt, the Board of Directors’ work aligns with the Principles of Good Practice (PGP) outlined by the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) as guideposts for best governance standards for independent school boards.
The PGPs reinforce that the Board is the guardian of the school’s mission, and that it is the Board’s responsibility to ensure the mission is relevant and vital to the community it serves, and to monitor the school's success in fulfilling it.
